Air Fryer Hot Dog Melt
While air-fried weiners with crispy buns are always a massive hit in my family, I love this new way to enjoy hot dogs. Served on toasted bread with veggies like peppers and onions, the air fryer ensures that the cheese melts perfectly over the sliced dog, creating a gooey treat that is hard to resist. The addition of the buttery, toasted bread adds a slight crunch that amplifies each bite in deliciousness. This Steak Melt, Onion Grilled Cheese, and Grilled Caprese are more easy melts to create in your air fryer.
Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Dog Ingredients
- Hot dog: Evenly cut into 3 slices
- Slice of bread: Go for a hearty and robust loaf such as sourdough or rye. These types of bread offer a sturdy flavor and a thicker texture that will stand up well to air-frying. If you’re in the mood for something a bit sweeter, use challah or brioche instead. This will give your sandwich an elevated sweetness yet still perfectly balanced with all your desired fillings.
- Mayo: Spread a thin layer on a slice of bread.
- Vegetables: Feel free to add any veggies of your choice. I chose the air-fried peppers and onions. You can also add mushrooms or sauteed onions instead.
- Cheese: Provolone and mozzarella are great options to pair with any type of filling. If you want something a bit bold, try Swiss or cheddar – they will both deliver a cheesy punch but won't overpower the other ingredients in your sandwich.
How to Make Grilled Cheesy Dog Sandwich in the Air Fryer
- Preheat your air fryer to 375F (190° C).
- Cut hot dog into 3 even slices lengthwise.
- Spread mayo on top of the bread slice.
- Lay hot dog slices on top of the bread.
- Add veggies or any other toppings you choose.
- Lay a large piece of cheese on top. I chose Provolone.
- Place your assembled sandwich directly onto the air fryer basket or tray.
- Air fry for 4 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and caramelized to your liking.
How to Keep the Cheese from Flying off your Sandwich in the Air fryer?
It has been reported in our Air Fryer Facebook group that cheese slices are getting blown off the sandwich and may fly around.
Remember, all air fryers are different and their fans run at different speeds, so this may not be the issue for all fryers. But if it does happen in your air fryer, this means that the fan in yours is extra powerful, and here are some easy fixes:
- Use shredded cheese instead.
- Heat the sandwich for a minute on a "toast", "bake" or “roast” mode. This will ensure that the cheese begins to melt and will become heavy enough to weigh itself down. Then proceed with air fry mode as per directions.
- Place a rack over your sandwich to stop the toppings from flying around.
- Use the bake option instead of the air-fry option. I love to use the air fry option for my melty sandwiches because I feel nothing beats the crispiness and caramelization of freshly prepared grilled cheese sandwiches in the air fryer.
- Use the toothpicks to stop the cheese from flying off. Make sure you insert them through the cheese into the bread.
- Make sure your air fryer is pre-heated. A hot interior of the air fryer helps the cheese to melt more quickly.
Other Toppings for Hot Dog Melts
Delicious Hot dog sandwiches can be topped with all sorts of delicious condiments and accompaniments. Just be sure they go below the cheese, so the cheese can melt over the toppings. Try:
- Sauteed Onions
- Mushrooms
- Roasted Sweet Peppers
- Bits of Candied bacon
- Jalapenos
- Or paradigmatic options like mustard, relish, chili, or coleslaw.

are the hot dogs cooked before you start the air fry ? You certainly have great menus. Thank you.
Irina
Thank you very much! The hot dogs that you get from the supermarket are typically fully cooked (not raw). Then there are different methods - grill, bbq, oven or air fry. Try in the air fryer for the best results
