Air Fryer Onion Potatoes (Lipton Onion Soup)

Jump to Recipe

Air fryer onion potatoes made with Lipton onion soup mix recipe is one of the most buttery and flavorful dishes you'll ever try! By cooking them in the air fryer, potatoes become golden and crisp on the outside and wonderfully tender on the inside, bursting with rich onion flavor.

crispy air fryer potatoes and onions

I adapted the recipe right off the box of Lipton Instant onion soup mix. Then converted it into an easy air fryer recipe. Preparing them is a breeze - all you need to do is slice some potatoes, combine them with a little oil, and a packet of Lipton soup mix, then place them in the air fryer for a delicious family dinner.

I also love to add sliced onions to the mix. I’m obsessed with cooking with onions. I feel that sauteed onions add so much flavor to many dishes. Some of my favorite recipes with onions are Air Fryer Potatoes and Onions, Rich and flavorful French Onion Soup, and plain ol’ Caramelized onions in the Air Fryer to name a few.

What Potatoes are Best for Air Frying?

When it comes to air frying potatoes, you want something that will hold up against the heated air.

Russet potatoes are the best choice for air frying because of their high starch content; this makes them crispier when cooked. Yukon gold potatoes are also a great option because of their waxy texture — these will hold their shape longer during the cooking process.

For a heartier potato, try red or sweet potatoes — the natural flavors of these varieties infuse nicely with Lipton Onion seasoning and make delicious side dishes.

Ingredients

Potatoes: I used 3 medium potatoes for this recipe - Russet, gold, and red.

Onion: Slice one yellow, sweet, or red onion into the mix.

Oil: 1 Tablespoon of Avocado oil or Extra Virgin Olive oil.

Onion Soup Mix: Use 1 packet of Lipton Onion soup mix. There are a few other brands and varieties of onion mixes and all are pretty easy to get from the local supermarket. Lipton Onion, Knorr French Onion or Simply Organic to name a few.

Salt & Pepper: Just a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Keep in mind, that the Lipton onion soup mix has enough sodium in one envelope. Check the nutrition label first.

Garlic: Use 1 minced fresh garlic or ½ teaspoon of garlic powder.

How to Make the Best Onion Soup mix Potatoes in the air fryer

Lipton Onion Potatoes are cooked in Ninja Foodi 6-in-1 Air Fryer.
  1. Scrub: Wash and scrub the potatoes. Leave the skin on.
  2. Slice: Cut the potatoes into wedges, approximately 1-inch cubes. (Picture 2).
  3. Rinse: I always give my potatoes a quick rinse with cold water until the water is clear. This helps to rid of the starch. Alternatively, you can soak the potatoes in cold water for 10 minutes. (Picture 2).
  4. Dry: Pat them dry and transfer to a large bowl.
  5. Season: Add oil, salt and pepper to taste, sliced onion, minced garlic, and one packet of Lipton Onion soup mix. (Picture 3).
  6. Mix: Mix all the ingredients to combine. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  7. Preheat: While the potatoes are absorbing all the flavors, preheat your air fryer to 390°F (198°C) on air-fry/air crisp setting.
  8. Add to basket: Place the potatoes directly in the basket (or tray) of the air fryer and cook for 12-15 minutes depending on size. (Picture 4).
  9. Flip: Be sure to set the timer and flip (shake) them every 5 minutes.
  10. Check: After 12 minutes, check for doneness and crispiness and determine whether you need to cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. I cook potatoes in the air fryer a lot and 12 minutes is optimal timing at 390F. The machine that I use is Ninja Foodi 6-in-1 Air Fryer.

Serving French Onion Potatoes

For breakfast, pair your morning roasted onion potatoes with Air Fryer Poached Eggs and bacon for a hearty start to your day.

For dinner, try them with Air fryer steak or Baby Back Ribs - the crunchy texture and earthy flavor of the potatoes complement heavier meats perfectly.

Lipton French Onion roasted potatoes are especially delicious when paired with other roasted vegetables, such as air-fried carrots, peppers, and red onions.

Store & Reheat

Transfer any leftovers into a clean airtight container. Make sure the potatoes are cooled down before storing them as warm potatoes may create condensation inside the container which could result in soggy potatoes later on. Store them in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the air fryer for 2 minutes per side to bring the outer crisp back.

You shouldn’t need to add any additional salt. The onion soup mix has plenty.

I agree with you. The onion soup mix has plenty of sodium. This is why I mentioned being cautious when adding salt to taste.
