Instant Pot Egg Roll in a Bowl is a one-pot quick and easy dinner idea that takes all of the classic flavors of an egg roll - cabbage, carrots, ground pork, garlic, and ginger - and turns it into a delicious, low-carb, and gluten-free meal. It's the perfect option for those craving the flavor without the hassle of rolling each individual egg roll.
I love a good egg roll wrapped up in crispy deliciousness, but I also love the convenience and simplicity of making it in a bowl when I crave the flavor without the hassle of rolling each individual egg roll. This recipe is perfect for busy weekdays when you don't have much time to spend in the kitchen. I use my instant pot to whip up this savory dish in record time. Plus, the clean-up is a breeze.
The egg roll in a bowl flavor reminds me of stuffed cabbage. Or I will call it "lazy stuffed cabbage" since the meat is not stuffed inside the cabbage but instead served in a bowl.
We love serving the egg roll bowls atop a bed of steaming hot rice, or cauliflower rice for a savory low-carb meal. More of my favorite cabbage recipes are Cabbage Fritters, Air fryer fried Cabbage, and Crispy air fryer Egg Rolls. Click the image below to "Jump" to the homemade air-fried egg rolls recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground pork (beef or turkey)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ cup of broth (beef, chicken, or veg.)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
- 2 cups cabbage, shredded
- 1 cup carrot, shredded
- 1 tablespoon Chinese Five Spice
- ¼ cup soy sauce (or coconut aminos for a gluten-free option)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons of chopped green onions, for garnish
Instructions:
Turn on the Instant Pot and select the "Saute" function. Add the olive oil, onion, garlic, and ginger. Saute for 3-5 minutes until fragrant.
Add the ground pork or turkey to the Instant Pot and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Drain the fat.
Add the shredded cabbage, and carrot to the Instant Pot. Mix everything well.
In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, Chinese Five spice, honey, and sesame oil. Pour the sauce over the ingredients in the Instant Pot. Add broth.
Close the lid and make sure the valve is set to "Sealing". Press the "Manual" button and set the timer for 3 minutes.
Once the timer goes off, do a quick release of the pressure by turning the valve to "Venting". Remove the lid carefully and give everything a good stir.
Serve the egg roll in a bowl hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
Egg roll chips
And let's not forget the chips! These crispy little snacks are perfect for dipping into your egg roll bowl, or just snacking on their own.
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Cut egg roll wrappers into strips and brush with oil.
- Bake in preheated oven for 4-5 minutes until bubbly and lightly brown. WATCH these carefully because they go from golden brown to burnt very fast! Alternatively, preheat air fryer to 375F and air fry them for 2 minutes per side.
- Let chips cool and enjoy with your egg roll bowls!
Why This Recipe Is Great
One of the reasons why I love Instant Pot egg roll in a bowl is because it’s a one-pot meal. With just one pot, you can cook the entire meal, which means less time spent on dishes and more time spent enjoying your meal. You also get a healthy serving of vegetables, protein, and complex carbs in one dish, making it a well-balanced meal that will keep you satisfied all day.
Variations
I love how easy it is to customize this recipe. You can swap out the ground pork or turkey for ground beef or chicken, or even go vegetarian by using tofu.
You can also add different vegetables, such as mushrooms, bell peppers, or broccoli, depending on what you have in your fridge.
The sauce can also be adjusted to your preferences, with more or less honey, soy sauce, or sesame oil.
You can make the recipe without Five Spice, but I love the flavor that it adds. I think this is what makes it taste more authentic.
Use Coleslaw mix instead of shredding carrots and cabbage.
Leftovers
Store the leftover egg roll mix in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Reheat in the microwave until heated through. Or use the mix to wrap up the egg roll in the air fryer.
Use in soups, stir-fries, or Irish corned beef and cabbage hash to spicy up beef and cabbage stir-fry.

I love that you figured out the carbs for this -- that is so helpful for this mama of a son with Type 1 Diabetes. We always need to know the carbs so my son can give himself the correct dose of insulin.
Irina
I'm glad the nutritional information for egg roll bowls was helpful to you and your son. I can't wait to hear what you think if you make it
MommaB
Have you ever doubled it? If so do you keep the liquids the same? I've tried and it was too wet so that's what I'm thinking but looking for a tried and true. My kids and hubby devour this, one batch would not cut it!
Thanks!
Irina
Yes I have doubled it... used a large packet of meat from bjs and large coleslaw mixture
.. but you're right, you need to keep liquid the same or else it gets too wet... you can apply more of the spices though to distribute the taste... my kids love it too but they make their own wraps
Diane
Can you use a crock pot if you don't have an Instapot?
Irina
Yes. However, I have not tried them in a crockpot. Not sure about the timing
