What is Fried Eggs in a Puff Pastry?
Puff Pastry Baked Eggs dish is a few minutes to put together delicious and hearty breakfast egg tart, yet looks like it came from a fancy cafe. This dish consists of eggs on top of puff pastry that has been baked in the oven until golden brown.
I made this recipe in the air fryer and the result is outstanding. It takes only 8-10 minutes to cook an egg puff in the air fryer, vs. 30 minutes in the oven, making it a perfect option for busy days when you want something special for breakfast or brunch. The egg can be done to your liking.
Puff Pastry Breakfast Egg Tarts in the Air Fryer
I’m a big fan of puff pastry and love baking puffy snacks at home or enjoying them at my local bakery. When I made this egg tart in a puff pastry in our air fryer, my kids were instantly obsessed. I love how puff pastry gives a crunchy base for the creamy eggs while adding flavor. Made with only 2 ingredients, puff pastry and eggs, and a pinch of parmesan cheese sprinkled on top, it adds even more depth, texture, and nuttiness to the dish.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets of puff pastry, thawed. 4 x 5-inch rectangles.
- 2 eggs
- Oil for brushing. Or spray oil.
- Salt & pepper to taste.
Directions
- Puff Patry Crust: Choose your favorite pre-made pastry dough and let it thaw. I used Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry ready-to-bake sheets.
- Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (177°C). The machine that I'm using for this recipe is Cuisinart Air Fryer Oven.
- Roll out puff pastry sheets and cut the dough into two 4x5-inch rectangles. (Picture1).
- Gently brush each rectangle puff with oil on each side. Or spray with oil. (Picture 2)
- Place the puffs directly onto the air fryer basket (tray) - preheated. (Picture 3).
- Bake on air-fry mode for 3-4 minutes until the pastry becomes puffy. (Picture 4 above).
- Remove from the air fryer and turn each rectangle puff on the other side. You may notice that the dough may still be uncooked and that’s ok. Picture 1 below.
- Using a large spoon, press firmly but gently, into the center of the puff to create a “nest” or a pocket. The pocket should be slightly lower than the outer edges of the puff pastry. (Picture 2). And make sure the base of the puff does not have any holes.
- Crack an egg and gently pour it into each pocket of the puff pastry dough, ensuring the yolk is not broken. Picture 3.
- Sprinkle the top of the egg with salt & pepper to taste. Use a dash of preferred seasoning. I sprinkled it with a pinch of Italian seasoning and a pinch of grated Parmesan cheese. Picture 3.
- Gently transfer the egg in a puff pastry into the preheated air fryer basket (tray) and cook for 6-7 minutes on air-fry mode. Peek at 6 minutes to see how the yolk looks. If it’s set, then it’s done. If you prefer a firmer yolk, cook for 7-8 minutes, and 8-10 minutes for a hard yolk. Picture 4.
Tips for making the Best Air-fried Eggs in a Puff Pastry
- Make large enough pockets in the pastry; this will give your egg a luxury space to spread out.
- Instead of a spoon, you can use the bottom of the mug or glass to press into the center of puff pastry to create a pocket for an egg.
- If you notice the egg whites running over the puff pastry into the tray, that’s normal. You can remove a spoonful of the white before adding it to the puff pastry.
- If the yolk breaks, do not panic. Just cook the puff with a broken yolk and see how it comes out. Next time you could be more careful not to break the yolk.
- If you like your yolk fully cooked, my tip above would be optimal for you.
- Ensure your machine is fully preheated before making air fryer eggs in a puff pastry.
- Let cool for a minute and serve immediately to enjoy the warm runny yolk.
Prep in Advance
You can make a puff pastry ahead of time to save time in the kitchen later on.
Bake on air-fry mode for 3-4 minutes until the pastry becomes puffy. You can assemble and air fry puff pastry dough up to five days prior to baking with an egg.
Store in the refrigerator until ready to crack an egg in it.
Variations - Be creative with your egg puffs!
- Use scrambled eggs, instead of sunny-side-up eggs, then fill in the pocket.
- Sprinkle in some cooked bacon or sausage and sautéed vegetables of your choice.
- Add a pinch (or more!) of cheese for extra flavor.
