This method makes a thick, fluffy, evenly cooked omelette in a pan inside your air fryer. No flipping. No folding disasters. No rubbery eggs. And here’s what actually makes the biggest difference: the depth of the egg mixture matters more than the temperature. I’ll explain why below.

Why Make an Omelette in the Air Fryer?

You don’t have to stand over the stove watching and flipping — the air fryer cooks it evenly from all sides without constant monitoring.

The circulating heat creates a thick, fluffy texture with slightly charred edges, that’s difficult to achieve in a traditional pan.

It’s perfect for meal prep because you can slice it neatly and store portions for quick breakfasts throughout the week — just like I do with my Air Fryer Egg Bites for busy mornings.

And since it cooks in a pan, it’s easier to cut and serve without tearing or folding mishaps.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Eggs, shredded cheese, diced ham, mushrooms, and green onions for omelette
  • 3 large eggs – The base of the omelette; room temperature eggs whisk more smoothly and cook more evenly.
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream – Adds tenderness and a softer texture (you can also use 1 teaspoon water for extra lift).
  • Salt and pepper
  • Shredded cheese
  • 2 tablespoons sautéed mushrooms – Pre-cooking prevents excess moisture and sogginess.
  • Optional fillings: spinach, mushrooms, peppers, cooked bacon, ham

Tip: If adding vegetables like peppers or onions, always pre-cook them first. Raw vegetables release water during air frying, which can make your omelette watery instead of fluffy.

How to Make an Air Fryer Omelette (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Whisk Properly (This Is Key)

Whisk for a full 30–40 seconds. You want air incorporated — that’s what creates fluffiness.

Step 2: Use the Right Dish

This is where most recipes fail. Use a Shallow Oven-Safe Dish or Pan. This is key.

Use a small oven-safe cake pan, pie dish, ramekin, or silicone mold that allows the eggs to spread out about ¾ to 1 inch thick.

If the dish is too deep (like a tall bowl), the edges will overcook while the center stays wet. A shallower layer allows the hot air to circulate evenly, so the omelette sets properly and stays fluffy.

I used a 9-inch square baking pan, but it doesn’t have to be square — round, oval, or rectangular all work. Thickness matters more than shape.

Step 3: Layer Smart

Add half the egg mixture.
Sprinkle fillings.
Top with remaining eggs.

This prevents heavy ingredients from sinking.

Step 4: Air Fry at 350°F (176 °C)

Cook 8–10 minutes depending on thickness.

  • 2 eggs: 8 minutes
  • 3 eggs: 9–10 minutes

The center should jiggle slightly — residual heat will finish it.

How Long to Cook an Omelette in the Air Fryer?

Cook your air fryer omelette at 350°F (176°C) for 8–10 minutes, depending on thickness and your specific air fryer model.

  • 2 eggs: about 8 minutes
  • 3 eggs: 9–10 minutes
  • Oven-style air fryers may take 1–2 minutes longer than basket models

The center should jiggle slightly but not look wet. Don’t wait until it’s completely firm inside — residual heat will continue cooking it for a few minutes after you remove it. If you prefer a softer, custardy texture, check at 8 minutes. For a firmer, fully set omelette, go closer to 10 minutes — but avoid overcooking, as eggs become rubbery quickly.

Pro Tips for the Fluffiest Air-fried Omelette

1️⃣ Add Cheese in the Middle, Not On Top

If you sprinkle cheese on top, it can harden before the eggs fully set. Layer it halfway through whisked eggs instead.

2️⃣ For Extra Fluff:

Add 1 teaspoon of water instead of milk. Steam creates lift.

3️⃣ Avoid Overfilling

Too many vegetables release water and cause sogginess. If adding mushrooms or spinach, pre-cook them first.

Variations & Substitutions

Dairy-Free. Skip the milk and cheese, or use dairy-free cheese. Water works instead of milk and actually helps create steam for lift.

Vegetarian. Swap ham for sautéed spinach, peppers, onions, or mushrooms. Always pre-cook watery vegetables to avoid a soggy omelette.

Make It Keto. This recipe is naturally low-carb. Just avoid starchy add-ins like potatoes.

Different Pans You Can Use

  • Small cake pan
  • Pie dish
  • Ramekin
  • Silicone mold

What to Serve With an Air Fryer Omelette

This fluffy air fryer omelette pairs best with something crispy or slightly sweet to balance its soft texture — try it alongside your Candied Bacon for a sweet-and-savory contrast, add a side of Air Fryer Asparagus for freshness, or serve it with Air Fryer Roasted Sweet Potatoes for a hearty breakfast plate. The combination of creamy eggs with crisp or caramelized sides makes the whole meal feel complete without much extra effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cook an omelette directly in the air fryer basket?

No. Liquid egg will drip through the perforations and create a mess (and possibly smoke). Always use an oven-safe pan, ramekin, silicone mold, or a disposable air fryer parchment liner with raised edges placed inside the basket. The disposable liners work well as long as they fully contain the egg mixture and sit flat in the basket — just make sure they’re weighted down with the food so they don’t lift during cooking.

How long does it take to cook an omelette in the air fryer?

Cook at 350°F for 8–10 minutes, depending on thickness and your specific air fryer model. The center should jiggle slightly but not look wet — residual heat will finish cooking it after removal.

Why did my air fryer omelette turn rubbery?

Eggs overcook quickly once they pass about 165°F internally. If you wait until the center looks completely firm inside the air fryer, it’s already overdone. Remove it while slightly jiggly for the softest texture.

Eggs are delicate. They’re breakfast — not brisket.

Can I make an air fryer egg white omelette?

Yes. You can use ½ cup egg whites instead of whole eggs. Cook time remains about the same, but egg whites cook slightly firmer and won’t be as rich or tender as whole eggs.

For better texture, add a teaspoon of water and avoid overcooking — egg whites turn rubbery faster than whole eggs.

Why is my omelette watery in the middle?

Usually one of two reasons:

  1. The dish was too deep, causing uneven cooking.
  2. Vegetables release moisture during cooking.

Always pre-cook mushrooms, spinach, peppers, or onions before adding them to the egg mixture.

Can I store and reheat an air fryer omelette?

Yes. Store slices in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Reheat at 300°F for 2–3 minutes. Higher temperatures can toughen the eggs.

Microwaving works, but it may slightly firm the texture.

Give it a Try

If you’ve been hesitant to make an omelette in the air fryer, this is your sign to try it. It’s fluffy, hands-off, and surprisingly foolproof once you understand the thickness and timing. Whether you keep it simple with cheese or load it up with veggies and ham, this method makes breakfast easier without sacrificing texture.

And if you’re building a full air fryer breakfast lineup, pair it with my Air Fryer Breakfast Potatoes, prep a batch of Air Fryer Quiche for the week, or master perfectly cooked Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs next. Once you start cooking eggs in the air fryer, it’s hard to go back to the stovetop.

  • Whisk the eggs: In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk (or water), salt, and pepper until smooth and slightly frothy.
  • Prepare the pan: Line a shallow oven-safe pan with parchment paper or use a disposable air fryer parchment liner with raised edges; if not using a liner, lightly spray the pan with cooking oil to prevent sticking.

Notes

  • Thickness matters most. Keep the egg layer about ¾–1 inch thick for even cooking. If the mixture is too deep, the edges may overcook before the center sets.
  • Check early rather than late. Air fryers vary, so check at the 8-minute mark. The center should jiggle slightly but not look wet.
  • Pre-cook vegetables. Mushrooms, spinach, and peppers release moisture during cooking. Sauté them first to prevent a watery omelette.
  • For extra fluff: Substitute milk with 1 teaspoon of water. The steam helps create lift.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat at 300°F for 2–3 minutes for best texture.
  • Avoid overcooking. Eggs firm up quickly once fully set. Removing the omelette slightly before it looks done keeps it tender.

  1. I made an omelet following this recipe, but it took way longer than 5 minutes in the air fryer. I had to finish it in the oven because the underside was still raw after almost 10 minutes in the air fryer. I think I will cook the omelet in the air fryer without the cheese, and add the cheese, just to brown on top, once it’s fully cooked.

    1. I love this recipe. I add whatever I have in the fridge from kielbasa to ham and veggies. It’s a quick meal any time if the day.

  2. Can someone please explain to me how this is an omelette? I’m new to air fryer cooking and I thought an omelette was always folded over eggs.

    1. Welcome! With an air fryer the omelet doesn’t have to be folded. It can be an open-faced omelette if you wish. I hope you enjoy it.

I just wanted to say that I’m loving your recipes for the airfryer and I’ve tried a few! Was going to give my airfryer the boot until i found you, so thank you.

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad you’re planning to try it soon. And great suggestion—yes, if using bacon, pre-cooking it will ensure it’s crispy and fully cooked in the omelette. Let me know how it turns out for you! 😊
