Air fryer cod has quietly become one of my favorite low-effort dinners lately. The fillets turn flaky and tender inside with lightly crisp edges, and the whole thing cooks fast enough for nights when I want something good without standing over the stove.

Cod is mild, quick-cooking, and very easy to season, which is why air fryer cod works so well for a simple dinner. I used Old Bay here for that classic seafood flavor, but lemon pepper, Cajun seasoning, garlic paprika, or a little Parmesan would all be delicious too. And if you love crispy-edged fish, my Air Fryer Salmon is another easy recipe to try next.

Why Cod Works So Well in the Air Fryer

Cod is naturally mild, flaky, and cooks quickly, which makes it ideal for air frying. The circulating heat cooks the outside fast without needing much oil, while the inside stays soft instead of greasy.

What surprised me most is how different cod behaves depending on moisture. If the fillets are wet from thawing, they steam instead of roast. Once I started patting them really dry with paper towels first, the texture improved immediately.

Little details like that matter more than fancy ingredients.

Ingredients

Please refer to the recipe ingredients and nutrition information at the bottom of this post. Gather the following ingredients for this delightful dish:

  • Cod fillets (thawed, if using frozen)
  • A teaspoon of your preferred cooking oil (olive oil or avocado oil works beautifully)
  • a sprinkle of salt and black pepper to taste
  • Seasoning of choice. I used Old Bay seasoning. I love how its unique blend of herbs and spices adds a delightful zest to the cod, enhancing its natural flavors.
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Optional:

  • Fresh parsley
  • Parmesan
  • Cajun seasoning
  • paprika and garlic powder

The Thickness Trick That Changes Everything

This is probably the most important part of the recipe.

A thick center-cut cod fillet may need several more minutes than a thin tail section, even if they weigh about the same.

Thin pieces can go from flaky to dry surprisingly fast in the air fryer, especially in smaller basket-style models that cook hotter and closer to the food.

If your pieces vary in thickness:

  • place thicker pieces toward the center,
  • remove thinner ones earlier if needed,
  • and start checking early instead of blindly following the timer.

That alone solves most “dry cod” problems.

How to Make Cod in the Air Fryer

Prep cod fillets: Pat the cod fillets very dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning stick better and keeps the fish from steaming. Brush lightly with oil on both sides and season them with your preferred herbs and spices. I used Old Bay seasoning. You can also use garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper for seasoning.

Preheat: Let cod marinate and absorb spices and herbs for 5 minutes. In the meantime preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Then, grease the air fryer basket with oil or cooking spray.

Air fry:  Place the cod fillets in the air fryer basket and cook for 8-10 minutes (depending on thickness – see notes below) or until it turns golden brown and crispy. Flip the fillets halfway through the cooking time to ensure it cooks evenly on both sides. Use a meat thermometer to check if the internal temperature of the fish has reached 145°F.

Prepare the dipping sauce: While the cod is cooking, prepare the tartar sauce: mix ½ cup mayonnaise, 2 teaspoons finely chopped pickles (or sweet pickle relish), 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of Dijon or yellow mustard, and a pinch of salt.

Or you can also make a fresh Cilantro Lime Dipping sauce – mix chopped cilantro, a little mayo, lime juice, garlic, and salt in a blender. Blend it until it becomes smooth and creamy.

Serve with a side salad, Air Fryer roasted vegetables, rice or Air Fryer French fries.

Variations

While this Air Fryer Cod recipe is delicious as is, you can always tailor it to your taste preferences. Here are a few suggestions to change up the recipe:

Roll it in Panko: You can coat the fish with breadcrumbs or panko for an extra crispy texture. I love to coat my Air Fryer Breaded Cod with panko breadcrumbs. They add an unparalleled crunch and also give the fish a flavor boost. Panko breadcrumbs, which are lighter and crispier than traditional breadcrumbs, are the perfect addition to any seafood dish for a game-changing taste and texture.

Experiment with different seasonings: Try Cajun seasoning, lemon pepper, garlic powder, or smoked paprika for a unique flavor profile. I love Jo-Ann’s easy Cod video recipe with Lemon-pepper seasoning.

Add citrus: Squeeze some lemon or lime juice over the cod before air frying for a tangy kick.

Infuse with herbs: Sprinkle fresh or dried herbs like parsley, dill, or thyme on top of the cod for an added aromatic touch.

Serve with dipping sauces: Accompany your Air Fryer Cod with tartar sauce, aioli, or a zesty homemade salsa for an extra burst of flavor.

You can also marinate the fish in lemon juice, olive oil, and herbs for a flavorful dish.

Cod can easily be swapped for other types of fish such as tilapia, sea bass, or haddock.

Leftovers

Once cooled, place the cod fillets in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. To reheat, pop them back in the air fryer for a few minutes at 350F until warmed through. However, I recommend enjoying this dish immediately after cooking for the best taste and texture.

Tips

Pay attention to these expert suggestions to ensure your cod fillets emerge from the air fryer with optimal taste and texture.

  1. If cooking frozen cod in the air fryer, please make sure it is thawed. First, avoid using hot water. Sure, it may seem like a quick fix, but trust me, we’re going to air fry cod, not start the cooking process in hot water. Instead, pop the frozen cod in the fridge overnight or place it in a sealed bag and submerge it in cold water for a quicker thaw.
  2. Pat the cod fillets dry with a paper towel before seasoning. This helps to remove excess moisture, allowing for better browning.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) before placing the cod inside. This ensures even cooking and a crispy exterior.
  4. Flip the cod halfway through the cooking time to promote even browning on both sides.
  5. Make sure your cod fillets are the same thickness. This ensures even cooking and not over-drying the thinner cod fillets.
  6. Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of the cod. It should reach 145°F (63°C) for safe consumption.
  7. Serve the Air Fryer Cod immediately to enjoy its optimal taste and texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 cod fillets about 1-inch thick. Thawed, if using frozen
  • 1 Tablespoon Extra virgin Olive oil or Avocado oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper to taste
  • 1 Tablespoon Seasoning I used Old Bay seasoning. You can also try it with lemon pepper seasoning, or cajun spice.

Instructions

  • Prep cod fillets: Pat the cod fillets dry with paper towels, then brush lightly with oil or melted butter. Season both sides with Old Bay or your favorite seasoning blend. Lemon pepper, Cajun seasoning, or garlic paprika all work really well here too.

Notes

  • For frozen cod, thaw it first for the best texture. I like thawing it overnight in the fridge or placing the sealed fish in cold water for a quicker thaw. Avoid hot water because it can start cooking the outside before the inside is ready.
  • Pat the cod very dry before adding oil and seasoning. This helps the seasoning stick and keeps the fish from turning watery in the air fryer.
  • Start checking early if your fillets are thin. Cod cooks fast, and thinner pieces may be ready before thicker center-cut fillets.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket. A little space around each piece helps the edges roast instead of steam.
  • Add lemon after cooking, not before. Fresh lemon at the end keeps the flavor bright without making the fish wet before it hits the air fryer.

      1. That is always a challenge with tender fish. I had much better luck once I bought a fish spatula designed to get under the fish. It is long and very flexible.

I also have learned it’s super important to oil the pan or backer with a basting brush.

My new favorite way to make fish! So flakey! My only issue was way too salty!! I will omit the salt next time, don’t need it.

Absolutely delicious! So easy to prep and quick to the plate. The fish flaked easily after 8 minutes. Second batch was thinner and was done in 4 minutes (the fryer was really preheated). So moist and flaky. Thank you. Didn’t have to turn the oven on!

    1. Yay! Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad it cooked perfectly for you. this is one of my fav fish to cook in the air fryer.

  4. I cooked this and everybody in the house loved it. I haven’t eaten fish in over 20 years because I got a bone in fillet fish, and it was awful I thought I was going to die it was hard to get it up. This recipe was excellent.

I love this recipe. I’ll go back to this recipe and try some of the suggestions the author suggested. I had avocado ranch dressing for my dipping sauce and it was delicious

I actually put the Old Bay Seasoning on first by mistake
Let it sit for about 20 minutes. Sprayed avocado oil both sides of filets and liberally in basket.
Cooked in preheated air fryer for 9 minutes flipping 1/2 way. Perfect. Served with lemon wedges, tartar sauce and coleslaw.
I think if you have trouble flipping, it’s already pretty well done. These were thin filets from the tail end and the fryer gave them a good sear whoch helped in ease of flipping and we found them steaming and tender inside.

Prenote: My first use of my first Air Fryer.

I was too well done with 10 minutes per side. I’ll go 7 next time.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience, Fred! It’s awesome that you’re diving into the world of air frying—welcome aboard! Cooking times can definitely vary depending on the thickness of the cod and the specific air fryer model. Adjusting to 5-7 minutes per side sounds like a great plan! You might also try checking the internal temperature next time (145°F is perfect for fish) to get it just right. Happy air frying, and let us know how it turns out!

    Further, I’ll mix up:
    1 Tbl Oil
dash salt and pepper very light
    1 tsp Old Bay

Mix, swipe cod in mix, marinate covered 5mins to 1hr. Then air fry.

    1. I’m so glad you loved it! Thanks for trying the recipe and sharing your feedback. Hope you make it again soon! 😊🍽️

  11. Im always confused but normally guess. when you say cook in Airfryer, does that mean to cook on airfry or bake

    1. Great question! When I say “cook in the air fryer,” I mean using the air fry setting. It gives the best crispy texture, while the bake setting works more like a regular oven. Hope that helps!

Mine only took 5 minutes to cook. I was about to flip it, decided to stick a thermometer in it, and it turns out it’s done!
It came out fantastic, and my husband couldn’t stop picking at it, haha.

    1. That’s awesome! Sounds like your air fryer was working overtime in the best way 😄 And I love that your husband couldn’t resist sneaking bites—that’s always the ultimate compliment!

  13. Hi. Your enthusiasm about this recipe trulyI excited me. I followed your advice to the letter for the preparation and cooking. I have a good Air Fryer (Instant Vortex Plus).

But I ended up overcooking the fish while waiting for the cod to be browned. It had very few brown spots, and nothing at all resembling your photos. Where may I have gone wrong?

    Thank you. I did subscribe.

    Jad

    1. Hi Jad, thank you so much for trying the recipe and for subscribing — that means a lot! 💛 It sounds like your cod may have been thinner or leaner, which can cause it to overcook before browning fully. Next time, try brushing the top lightly with oil and placing it closer to the heating element if your air fryer has multiple levels. Also, shortening the cook time just a bit might help preserve that tender center. Let me know how it goes if you try again — I’m here to help troubleshoot anytime! 😊
