What are Sausage Rolls?
A sausage roll is a type of savory pastry that is typically made from a casing filled with ground meat and various seasonings. The sausage filling is then rolled into a doughy pastry and baked until golden brown. Sausage rolls are a popular snack food in many parts of the world, and they can be found at most cafes and bakeries. Today I’m making the “lazy” sausage rolls, which only have 2 ingredients - ready-made sausage and puffed pastry sheets.
Ingredients
- 4 sausages. I used Trader Joe’s fully cooked Spicy Chicken Sausage with Jalapenos and red peppers.
- 4 sheets of puff pastry to roll the sausage
- Spray oil.
- Better than Bagel seasoning, optional
Directions
- Thaw the puff pastry sheets.
- Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (182°C).
- Place the sausage in the middle of the puff pastry sheet.
- Roll out the puff pastry to form a rectangle.
- Place the sausage meat onto the pastry.
- Roll up the pastry from one side, enclosing the sausage inside.
- Cut the roll into individual sausage rolls. I cut the sausage into 3 equal parts, approximately 2 inches long.
- Using a knife, gently cut a few slits in the puff pastry.
- Place the sausage rolls directly onto air fryer basket (or tray).
- Lightly spray each sausage roll with oil. I’m using Ghee butter oil spray.
- Cook in a preheated air fryer until golden brown and crisp. About 8 minutes, flipping halfway.
Can I use raw sausage meat with sausage rolls?
Absolutely! First, think about the type of sausage you want to use. If you're looking for a traditional flavor, go for pork sausage. For something a little different, try a lamb or beef sausage. You can also mix and match different types of meat to create your own unique sausage roll recipe. Once you've decided on the type of sausage, it's time to choose the add-ins. Popular choices include onions, garlic, herbs, and spices. For an extra kick, add some diced apples and onions.
Sausage rolls cooking time with the raw sausage meat
The ideal cooking temperature for raw sausage meat is 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 °C). To check the internal temperature of the sausage, insert a food thermometer into the center of the meat through the sausage roll. If the sausage is not yet at 160 degrees, continue cooking it until it reaches the correct temperature. The approximate cooking time in the air fryer is 5-6 minutes per side.
Dipping sauce for Sausage rolls
Whether you prefer a sweet option like barbecue sauce or a tangy mustard, dipping sauces add an extra layer of flavor to your sausage roll experience.
Popular options include barbecue sauce, ketchup, mustard, and ranch dressing. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even try this homemade Chipotle dipping sauce with a bit of spice, or Copycat Chick-Fil-A sauce.
