A Night at the Museum Sleepover @AMNH NYC

March 4, 2015 by Irina 2 Comments

Did you know you can have a sleepover and spend the night at the museum?

I didn’t, until AnimalJam.com, who was hosting the sleepover at the New York Museum of Natural History for bloggers and their kids, invited me on behalf of my blog.

With all the excitement, last Friday, my daughter and I packed our sleeping bags, sheets, pillows, tooth brushes and headed to the city. Our meeting place was at Porter House Steak Restaurant at 10 Columbus Circle, where the AnimalJam.com rented a private party room and hosted a fabulous dinner for us. We got there by 4:30 pm and there we met with the AnimalJam.com Staff, had a chance to chat about the upcoming sleepover and meet with the kids of all other parents who will be joining our group.

We had a wonderful time at dinner. The service was excellent. We had a choice between chicken and filet mignon. My daughter ordered her chicken and I, being at the steak house, of course ordered the latter. Our meals were very delicious.

At 7 pm the shuttle bus arrived by the Porter house and took us to the Museum of Natural History to be one of the lucky ones to spend the night at the museum where the sleepover program has already begun.

I think we’re all set to spend the night at the museum

The museum provided cots for us. We had to bring our sleeping bags, sheets, pillows and blankets. The cots were placed in various rooms, but we didn’t get to decide where we will sleep. It could be in a Whale room, Hall of Planet Earth, or the North American Mammals. We were placed in the North American Mammals room which I liked better that the Whale room, because it was very crowded. But any choice is good.

Once you set up your cot, you can change into pajamas, comfortable shoes or sleepers, you pretty much go and explore the museum on your own. The only thing I didn’t like is that some kids were walking around in their socks or even bare feet!!! Even in the bathrooms. Yuk… I don’t recommend this and you may want to speak with your kids and encourage them to leave their shoes on, if they go on sleepovers as part of their party or school trip.

At 11 PM all the lights went out. I’m not sure about the Whale room, but people in our room were exhausted after the long museum walk and after setting up comfortably in their cots, all kids and adults went to sleep. At least I know my daughter and I did. One thing I will recommend not to forget is the ear plugs. I put mine in but did occasionally woke up in the middle of the night because I was hearing some loud snores even through my ear plugs. My 8 year old slept fine though.

At exactly 7 in the morning the bright lights went on and everyone went to wash up and then downstairs the breakfast was served. The simple continental breakfast was nice. They have the large lunchroom. The museum served coffee, tea, water, juices, organic yogurts, muffins and fruits.

At 9 AM everyone must leave the building or visitors can request the extended free pass for the same day and continue exploring the museum.

Nights at the museum sleepovers are scheduled every 2-3 weeks and sell out fast so reserve your space well in advance. At $145 per person, it’s a splurge, but worth it for a memorable experience and would make a good holiday or birthday gift for any kid (recommended for kids ages 7-13)
